Two different finite element models investigation of the plunge stage in joining AZ31B magnesium alloy with friction stir welding

Abstract This study presents an investigation of the plunge stage in joining AZ31B magnesium alloy with friction stir welding using two different 3D finite element models based on Arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian formulation and Coupled Eulerian–Lagrangian formulation. The investigations are made ABAQUS program. Johnson–Cook plastic material law Coulomb used both models. Models compared terms temperature, strain distribution, processing time. In models, very similar temperature distributions obtained weld zone validated by experimental results. addition, increase rotational speed tool, similarly model formulation, mesh distortions occur when high density is not created zone. No problems related to distortion encountered Moreover, it found that has a lower time this affected tool.
